Today I used a 2001 Santa Fe with 73,000 miles to go over to where we take the trades to fetch keys to another car and on my way back, something odd happened. I accelerated briskly, but not hard from a stop sign. As the transmission shifted from 2nd to 3rd, there was a violent lurch, a loud clunk and the car failed to accelerate. The whole car shuddered slightly, the 'CHECK ENGINE' light came on and the tach dropped so low (500 rpm) I feared the engine would stall at 35 mph. I carefully stopped at a light and put the shifter into shiftronic. The dash light indicated third gear and would not let me shift up or down manually. For starters, my Santy will only let me select 1st or 2nd gear while stopped so I knew right off the bat that something was not right. I put the tranny into park, shut the engine off and restarted it. It ran fine the block and a half back to the dealership although the CEL remained lit. The service guys plugged in the OBD computer and it came up as speed sensor failure. Is this a common problem for a 2001?
Santa Fe -- It doesn't get any better than this!
