john,
I have changed mine twice on my Santy with no problems. Really the plug starts to drain before it's completely unscrewed. Even if you loosen it all the way there is no problem to align it and screw it back in. You don't really even take it all the way out it seems. I just make sure to use distilled water when I flush and fill.
