The AWD transfer case DOES NOT use auto transmission fluid. It is a separate gear box which uses 90W gear lube. There is a separate drain and fill plug for the transfer case. It takes a metric "star" type socket to remove the plugs. Your rear differential is the same and also uses 90W gear lube.

Remove the transfer case "fill" plug (it is the upper of the two) If it is full or near full some oil might run out. If not you can stick your little finger in just a bit and see if you can touch oil. You can also make a little tool that looks like the letter "J" to insert, upside down, to see the oil level. It would be like a little dip stick. The transfer case is very difficult to fill because it is so high up when you are under the Santy. It is best to have a pump type filler that has a hooked nozzle that you can place in the filler and pump a little oil until you see it running from the filler. Then, it's time to stop and replace the fill plug.
